Save money on your ride out of Phnom Penh Airport

When you walk out of PNH, you will see a line of taxis and a line of tuk tuk drivers anxious to give you a ride. Welcome to the Kingdom of Cambodia. This will now be the norm during your stay here.

I live on the outskirts of the city so for me to get a tuk tuk home, the lowest they'll go is $15. I once ventured a little further into the parking lot and found a driver that would take me for $12. I'm not sure how much they charge to drive you to Riverside, but I imagine it isn't cheap. Probably $5 to $10 depending on your haggling skills. Remember that there is a lot of competition out there for them so don't be afraid to walk away. They may change their minds and agree on your price - or the next driver down may take you up on your offer.

Now if you're looking for a good price, I recommend taking the city bus. There is a bus stop right outside of the airport on the main street. Of course, the drivers are not going to tell you this and they will still try to get you to get in even if you're standing in the bus stop.

To get there, just find the nearest exit out of the arrivals area at the airport. You basically just turn left out to the arrival hallway and head straight to the parking lot and keep going. Once you get out of the gate, you can take a left down the sidewalk. Keep going until you see the covered benches. It looks like a typical bus stop. There is no schedule for the bus line other than 5:30 am to 8:30 pm. This does not really tell you when the bus will be arriving though. I believe they run about every twenty minutes to an hour.

Now you may be asking yourself why would you want to wait that long. Well, the price for the city bus is 1,500 riels. That equates to about 38¢. The bus will take you all the way to the Night Market at Riverside. I recommend getting change before leaving the airport as the people on the bus may not speak English or have change for a larger bill.

It's really that simple. There isn't much room for luggage. I imagine they won't get too upset if you have some stuff to bring on. It's more convenient if you're a backpacker. There will be a driver and another person collecting money. If you have riels, great. If not, $1 will do. ($1 equates to 4,000 riels).

Once you're on, there are many stops along the way if you need to get off. There are stop buttons located between the windows. Normally just a small red button. There will be a horn sound after the button has been pushed. If you are heading to the Riverside area, just stay on the bus until you reach the end of the line. You'll see the Night Market sign to your left and a river on your right.
